Aguas de Portugal (AdP) business group operates in the environent sector in Portugal and its mission focus on achieving the portuguese national objectives in the water supply and sewage sanitation and treatment as well as the valuation of waste.

In the water supply and sewage sanitation, the operations team of Aguas de Portugal works on an urban water cycle, involving capture, treatement, storage, supply and collection of urban and industrial sewage. It also includes its treatment and provision, involving recycling and reutilization.



The water sector, as other industrial sectors, is under a lot of pressure as far as investments and exploitation costs go. This is one AdP’s main concerns: To have an efficient predictive maintenance plan that allows them to make informed decisions when faults and alarms are detected in certain field control points, hence reducing its maintenance costs. A remote management SCADA system is required in order to acquire real time field information enabling AdP access to historical and current data on demand to inform their decisions.

However, one of the typical features of water installations is its de-centralized architecture. Hence, one of its key challenges in this sector is the ability to remote monitor and control in real time. As remote management systems continue to grow in complexity, communications devices utilised in these architectures are required to be very robust and versatile.

DNP3 (Distributed Network Protocol, version 3) is the remote metering industrial protocol adopted by AdP in the communications between the Omron PLCs installed in its distributed plats, and its SCADA systems managing its remote management applications.
