Electricity meter
October 2023 was the deadline announced by Red Eléctrica de España (REE) for customers whose installations are at energy exchange boundary points and communicate with the main metering concentrator to migrate their reading systems to an IP-based infrastructure. This covers all Type 1 and Type 2 meters, both on the mainland and in non-mainland territories.

The reason behind this transition lies in Telefónica’s announcement, as part of its fixed network transformation plan, that it will close all of its copper exchanges by April 2024. Mobile operators provide PSTN services over them, and traditional remote metering systems were based on these services. This strategic change seeks to move towards a faster and more secure digital world, reduces the environmental impact of the fixed network by 94% and guarantees the continuity and improvement of Red Eléctrica de España’s customer reading systems.

The migration to an IP-based infrastructure is a proactive response to technological change that ensures the effectiveness and coverage of services in the future.
The impact on the industrial sector is at REE boundary points, where meters will no longer be read through the phone number of the remote modem’s SIM card, but directly through the IP address and a TCP port of the metering equipment. It is therefore essential that this IP address is reachable and accepts incoming connections, so that data can be shared effectively.
Noxium’s modem-router families include the technologies and tools needed to act as link points in these use cases. Specifically, they include 4G LTE, 3G and 2G mobile network technologies, and can receive these IP communications from IEC data concentrators or collectors and adapt the traffic to the specific interfaces built into meters and recorders, such as RS232 and/or RS485 serial or Ethernet. Their DynDNS and firewall capabilities are especially useful for working securely on networks where IP addresses must be public.
See the AXOM P model in our catalogue for RS485 buses or RS232 links to local devices, or the AXOM CP model if you also need local Ethernet networks.
